I found these trellis at Big Lots. I got 10 of them to put up on the deck rails. I want to get some ivy growing on them to make the deck a bit more private yet still open. I think the feel will be a bit like a compound around a house in the Philippines and that will remind me of Rose. After all, the deck is "Rose's Cafe"!

Erin and I floated the North Umpqua River yesterday. The water was a bit high, and that made the rapids a rolling roller coaster. We had lunch on the river, then dinner at the Rodeo Grill.

He will be the co-coordinator of the Wednesday night services there, and has been accepted as a second-year intern in the fall. His job at Sherm's is working out well, also. David will be moving back into our apartment this week, and I'll be so happy to have him back!

There are some things you just need a car to do, but I still plan to bike whenever possible.

After looking at several clunkers on Craig's List, I came across this gem that actually fit my budget of under $500. It's a 1987 Volvo 740 GLE. Excellent condition throughout. Silver. Everything works. Looks like a tank, rides like a cloud.

I love cooking stir fry. You just get you some meat…anything…chicken, pork, beef, even sausage…and cut it up into bite-sized pieces. Then cut up some fresh vegetables…whatever sounds good…squash, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, pepper….then put it all together in a wok with some oil. Sautee the meat, add some soy sauce, garlic, and whatever else you like….oyster sauce, ..whatever, then when it's done, put it on top of some rice. You got a great meal in 30 minutes!

This is my day off so I cycled down to Walmart and got myself a rice cooker! Now I can make rice with all my meals, just like Rose does!

I've come to like rice, and appreciate how it fills out almost any meal. Today, I'm making some pork adobo to put over the rice, and some steamed broccoli. The rice cooker is nearly automatic; you just put in the rice and water, turn it on and wait.

I also got a small headlight for my bike. I have to occasionally ride it before sunrise or after sunset. There's plenty of street lights so I can see to ride; I just want to also be seen, especially by cars.

My car up a died a couple weeks ago. Timing belt broke and bent a bunch of valves. It would cost around $1500-2500 to fix. I could buy a much better car for that kind of money, so I sent it to the scrap yard. It's been a good car, but now it's time to rest.

I started using my bicycle to get around. At first it was just a temporary thing. But, Roseburg is so compact, and everything I routinely need is just right here, it wasn't a problem getting around on my bike. My work, lots of shopping, restaurants, banks, barbers...it's all right here.

Then I started adding things up. Auto insurance, tags, taxes, maintenance, repairs.....it amounts to thousands of $$$$$$ a year, just to maintain something I don't actually need! My bicycle uses no gasoline, needs about 15 minutes of maintenance/year which I do myself on the front steps, gets me the cardiac exercise I need, makes people think I'm politically correct for going "green", it's fun to ride, and if it breaks down, worst case is I buy a brand new one at Walmart for less than $100.00!

On those rare occasions when I actually need to go outside my little community, there are public transportation alternatives.

Even the weather is not really a factor. Yes, it can be cold in winter, and yes, it may rain or snow. But I just dress accordingly; no place I have to go is really that far away anyway.

So, I've made a decision to not buy a car and stick with my bicycle. Some of my friends think that's an unusual decision. But so far, none of them have been able to give me one reason why I should throw away thousands of dollars on another vehicle

After a lot of research, I decided to get this little washing machine. I put up a portable clothesline in my "backyard" (my deck) and I am pleased with this arrangement! The washing machine can handle my laundry if I use it every couple days. It's easy to use, and I can do it while I'm making dinner. No lugging everything to the laundrimat, no quaters, no waiting. I can just incorperate laundry with whatever other puttering around the house I want to do!

The five of us had our Christmas celebration on Christmas night at Erin's house. Erin, Chris, David and Billie worked all day to cook dinner while I was at work at Mercy. We had ham, mashed potatos, gravy, peas, green bean casserole, stuffing, and a blueberry dessert that Chris made from his mother's recipe.

After dinner we opened presents and then played "Clue". It was an absolutely magnificant Christmas!
